Submissions

It is recommended that authors examine the latest issue to acquaint themselves with AUR ‘style’, but there is no need to submit papers in two-column format.

  • Papers should be submitted in Microsoft Word.
  • Paper length: variable, 2000 - 7000 words, including text, tables, figures and references, should be taken as an indicative length.
  • Ethical considerations: it is presumed that authors have followed standard scholarly ethical practices involved in seeking to present their work or to have it published. In particular they must acknowledge relevant funding bodies and scholarly input.

Please set up your document as follows:

  • paper size: A4
  • margins: 2.54cm top, bottom, left and right
  • font: Times New Roman 10 pt for text.
  • indent (left & right) 0 pt
  • spacing (before and after) 0 pt
  • page numbers: centred at bottom of page
  • language: English (United Kingdom). Do not send in papers with either US spelling or usage.

In-text style:

  • Use 'per cent' rather than '%' in the text. Use ‘%’ in tables and figures where space is constrained.
  • Use ‘s’ rather than ‘z’ in words such as ‘organise’ (analyse, recognise, etc.).
  • Use a single space at the end of sentences.
  • Use single quotation marks. Use double quotation marks for quotes within a quote. All quotes of more than 50 words should be indented and placed in a separate paragraph.
  • Dates thus: 30 June 2010.
  • Authors should ensure that the material cited in the text matches the material listed in the References.
  • Neither male nor female pronouns should be used to refer to groups containing persons of both sexes.
  • Do not use numbered sections.
  • Do not use underlining.
  • Do not use footnotes, endnotes or any headers or footers EXCEPT for page numbers (bottom of page, centred).
  • Avoid use of abbreviations, except for well-known organisations or processes.
  • Tables and figures should be incorporated into the text close to where they are first referred. In general, ‘tables’ comprise data, and ‘figures’ comprise everything else (graphs, photographs, etc).
  • Tables and figures should have separate numbered sequences, and titles should be above. Figures should be prepared in black and white. Graphs with coloured bars are often illegible in black-and-white print

References:

  • AUR requires references according to APA 5th or 6th edition (with minor exceptions).
  • Some worked examples follow. Note particularly how internet-sourced material should be reported.

References in the text should be given in the author-date style:
King (2004) argues...
or as various authors argue (King 2004; Markwell 2007).

Page references should be thus: (King 2004, p. 314).

Page references should be used for direct quotations.

The reference list should be placed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper, utilising the author-date system.
