The Australian Universities' Review (AUR, formerly Vestes) is published by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) to encourage debate and discussion about issues in higher education and its contribution to Australian public life, with an emphasis on those matters of concern to NTEU members. AUR publishes both articles and other contributions, including short commentary and satire. Articles will be assessed by independent referees before publication. Priority is given to contributions which are substantial, lively, original and have a broad appeal. Responses to previously published contributions are encouraged. The views expressed in articles in this publication, unless otherwise stated, are those of the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of the Editorial Board or the publisher. AUR is listed on the DEST register of refereed journals. Editor From 1 March 2008, the editor of AUR is Dr Ian Dobson. Ian splits his time between being an honorary research fellow with Monashs Centre for Population and Urban Research, and as a small c consultant. Current and recent Australian clients include the University of Ballarat, Monash and Victoria Universities and the Australian Council of Deans of Science. He is also the Australian representative of the US-based Educational Policy Institute. An administrative career in planning and statistics from 1971 to 1995 at RMIT, Melbourne and Monash preceded nearly ten years spent as associate to Monashs previous Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He completed a Monash PhD on higher education equity policy and social mobility in 2004, has authored/co-authored about fifty published papers, and presented a similar number of papers at conferences in Australia, Europe and the USA. His research interests include access and equity, student fees, university funding, the so-called brain-drain, the decline of science in Australian universities and academic/general staff relationships. He spends some of each year in Finland and works casually as an English language reviser of PhDs, academic papers, policy documents and manuals. Regular clients include Finlands Universities of Helsinki and Tampere, Svenska Handelshögskolan and the Ministry of Education, and Norways premier higher education research body, NIFU Step. His first foray into formal journal editing occurred in 1997 with the Journal of Institutional Research (19972002) and he has been editor of the Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management since 2000.
